Why Pembrokeshire homeowners are switching to renewables
Pembrokeshire is the only coastal national park in Britain, and it is also one of the most energy-intensive corners of the UK — a combination that shapes everything about how the county thinks about power. Milford Haven handles a substantial share of Britain's gas imports through the South Hook and Dragon LNG terminals, Pembroke Power Station is among the largest gas-fired plants in Europe, and the Celtic Freeport designation has put the Haven waterway at the centre of the UK's floating offshore wind ambitions in the Celtic Sea. Residents here have lived alongside national energy infrastructure for fifty years, and there is a well-earned local scepticism about whether any of that ever translates into a cheaper bill at the kitchen table. It generally has not. Pembrokeshire households pay some of the highest effective energy costs in Wales, driven by a rural housing stock that leans heavily on oil and LPG heating, long single-phase distribution lines, and a shortage of installers willing to travel west of Carmarthen. The county also runs a seasonal economy — holiday lets, caravan parks, campsites, pubs and restaurants around Tenby, Saundersfoot, Broad Haven and St Davids — where summer electricity demand spikes hard and margins are tight. Pembrokeshire County Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has been steadily retrofitting its own estate, while Welsh Government funding through Nest remains open to qualifying households across the SA postcodes. Solar PV in Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire has the best solar resource of anywhere we cover, and it is not close. The Dale peninsula and the south coast around Tenby and Manorbier record some of the highest sunshine totals in Wales — comfortably over 1,700 hours a year in a good year, against roughly 1,450 in Cardiff. A 4kW array in an SA70 or SA71 postcode will typically generate 3,900 to 4,300 kWh annually, which is a meaningful uplift on the same system installed sixty miles east. The trade-off is exposure: coastal Pembrokeshire gets salt-laden onshore wind, so we specify marine-grade mounting hardware and stainless fixings as standard within a few miles of the coast rather than treating it as an upgrade. Agricultural buildings across the county — dairy sheds around Whitland and Narberth, potato and cereal stores on the Castlemartin and Angle side — offer large clear south-facing spans that make excellent commercial rooftop projects, and we quote ground-mount arrays for landowners where roof space is the limit. Battery storage in Pembrokeshire
Battery storage earns its keep in Pembrokeshire for two separate reasons. The first is resilience: much of the county sits at the end of long rural distribution lines, and storm-season outages along the coast are a genuine and recurring nuisance rather than a theoretical risk. A properly sized battery with backup capability keeps the lights, the freezer, the broadband and the heating controls running through an interruption. The second is the seasonal economics that define the local economy — a holiday let or campsite in Tenby or Saundersfoot generates far more solar in July than it can possibly consume at changeover, and stores the surplus for the evening occupancy peak instead of exporting it at a fraction of its value. For homes off mains gas, which is a large share of the county, a battery on Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus charging overnight at the low rate takes a serious bite out of the cost of running electric heating or a heat pump. EV chargers in Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire is exactly the sort of place where a home charger stops being a convenience and becomes the whole basis of running an EV. Public rapid charging has improved around Haverfordwest, Pembroke Dock and the A40 corridor, but coverage thins out fast on the St Davids peninsula and across the north of the county, and relying on it through a bank holiday weekend when the county's population swells is not a plan. Charging at home overnight on an off-peak tariff covers the long daily distances that Pembrokeshire drivers cover as a matter of routine, at a fraction of public rapid pricing.
